About this kit

This is the Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS, a G Master telephoto zoom for wildlife and birds, field sports, motorsport, airshows and anything you can't walk up to. It also works at outdoor events and stage shows, where the long end gives you a clean close-up from the back of the crowd.

Optical stabilisation works with the in-body system on our Alpha bodies, so handheld shooting at 400mm is realistic in decent light. Autofocus is fast and quiet, which matters for video as much as stills. At about 1.4kg it's manageable handheld for a session, though you'll want support over a full day, and the barrel extends as you zoom towards 400mm. The honest trade-off is the variable aperture: at f/5.6 on the long end, in a dim hall or late in the day, ISO climbs quickly.

It takes both of our teleconverters: the Sony 1.4x Teleconverter makes it a 140-560mm f/6.3-8, and the Sony 2.0x Teleconverter Lens a 200-800mm f/9-11 for bright conditions. For stills, pair it with the Sony A9 III or Sony A1 II for fast action, or the Sony A7R V when you want room to crop. For video it suits the Sony FX6 or Sony FX3, and the Manfrotto XPRO 5-Section Aluminum Monopod takes the weight on long days.

Questions people ask

What's included with each item?
It's listed on the item page under "in the case" — batteries, cards, chargers, cages and cases where they come with the kit. If something you need is not listed, add it from Accessories or ask.
Can I extend while the kit is out?
Yes, if nobody else has it booked — message us before your return date and we update the booking and the invoice. The earlier you ask, the more likely the answer is yes.
What if something gets damaged?
Minor wear is expected and never charged. Accidental damage is covered by your hire agreement: you are responsible for the kit while it is with you, and significant damage is charged at the repair or replacement cost.
